Arthur Ashe

Arthur Ashe
American athlete Arthur Ashe first made his mark as a college and professional tennis player and later, after his retirement from competition in 1980, as a social activist and advocate for AIDS awareness and research. His victory at the 1968 United States Open tournament became the first time a black player won a major men’s tennis championship. After his retirement from professional tennis, Ashe put his fame and talents to use working for the improvement of social conditions, particularly for impoverished African Americans. Ashe is pictured here playing at Wimbledon, where in 1975 he became the first black men’s tennis player to win the prestigious tournament.
