| American swimmer Mark Spitz won seven gold medals in the 1972 Olympic Games at Munich (in what is now Germany), breaking world records in all seven events. Spitz’s success in 1972 came on the heels of his controversial performance at the 1968 games in Mexico City, Mexico, when he publicly predicted he would win six gold medals, but won only two.
