John Peter Altgeld
German-born American John Peter Altgeld made several controversial decisions during his tenure as governor of Illinois. In one, he commuted the sentences of three anarchists convicted of conspiracy in Chicago’s Haymarket Square Riot of 1886. The riot involved a confrontation between police and strikers and their supporters, during which seven police officers were killed.
