Franciscan Monk
Known as itinerant preachers who took vows of poverty and were devoted to charity, Franciscan monks sailed with Christopher Columbus in a mission to convert the New World peoples to Catholicism. In the late 1490s they established the first convent in what would later be called the Dominican Republic. The first order of Franciscans was established in 1208 in Italy.
