A nocturne is a short composition evoking the mood of nighttime; its quiet, contemplative feeling made it a favorite genre in the 19th century. This example, Op. 15, No. 2 (1833), is from a set of three nocturnes by Polish composer Frédéric Chopin and is performed here by Polish-born American pianist Arthur Rubinstein, who specialized in the works of Chopin. Rubinstein brings out the free, expressive melody typical of Chopin’s nocturne style.
