Although Danish composer Carl Nielsen worked in all musical genres, he is especially important for his symphonies. These works show a variety of influences, particularly in the expanded harmonies and orchestral forces typical of music written in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This excerpt, from the last movement of his Symphony No. 4 (1914-1916), the Inextinguishable, illustrates Nielsen’s characteristic interest in strong, dynamic rhythms, evident here in his writing for brass and timpani.
