Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti’s harpsichord sonatas show the beginnings of a distinctive keyboard technique designed to show off the capabilities of the harpsichord, especially its crisp attack and its virtuoso qualities. This excerpt from his Sonata in F minor, K. 519 is played by Polish harpsichordist Wanda Landowska, whose recordings and performances of works like Scarlatti’s were important in reviving the popularity of the instrument in the 20th century.
