Fidjeri is a musical repertoire performed traditionally by male pearl divers of Bahrain. In 1932 the Japanese pearl cultivation industry brought diving to a halt, but the repertoire has been passed down to descendants of the divers who continue to meet and perform the fidjeri. In this excerpt the lead singer and a group of 20 pearl divers are accompanied by clapping, drums, and earthen water jars. Dancing is also sometimes associated with the fidjeri.
"Haddadi" performed by pearl divers from Muharraq, Bahrain, led by Salim Alán, from Music in the World of Islam (Cat.# Tangent Records TSCD901) (p)1976 Tangent Records Ltd. All rights reserved.
