The Miao are one of 56 official ethnic minorities in China. They live in southwestern China and are related to the Hmong of northern Thailand. In this example a young man and a woman sing a qingge, or love song. It is usually a question-and-answer song, utilizing veiled language and metaphors to communicate feelings. By alternating ordinary and falsetto voices the singer implies an expression of love.
