The Batak Toba are one of at least seven ethnic groups considered indigenous to the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. Their outdoor music ensemble (gondang sabangunan) includes a set of five tuned drums (taganing) played by a single musician using two sticks. The drums have the unusual feature of carrying the full melody. The ensemble also includes a double reed, bass drum, four gongs, and a small percussion instrument.
"Gondang Haro-haro" performed by musicians from Parondang on Samosir, from Music of Indonesia, 4, Music of Nias and North Sumatra (Cat.# Smithsonian/Folkways CD SF40420) (p)1992 Smithsonian/Folkways Recordings. All rights reserved.
