Sinawi was originally ensemble music performed for the deities during a female shaman ritual dance, particularly in the southern provinces of South Korea. The music is known today for its improvisation. The musicians must follow the shaman’s dance and create interesting melodic and rhythmic patterns to help her perform. In this excerpt the melody is based on the melodic mode kyemyon. The main soloist is playing a cylindrical oboe called the piri.
"Poong-mool nori and taepyongso sinawi" performed by Chang Dokhwa, Nam Kimun, No Jongak, Pak Pomhun, Kim Kwangbok, from Sinawi Music of Korea (Cat.# King KICC 5163) (p)1992 King Records. All rights reserved.
