Cape Breton Island, off the coast of Canada, was originally settled by Scots, later taken over by the French, then largely settled by Scots again. Music from this island, often played on the fiddle and piano, includes reels, jigs, strathspeys (a Scottish country dance), and marches. This Scottish reel, played by French Canadian fiddler Joseph Cormier, is an excellent example of the musical exchange between the French and the Scots that has helped create a unique and continuing Canadian musical style.
"Lord Seaforth" performed by Joseph Cormier, from Joseph Cormier and Friends (Cat.# Rounder CD 7013) (p)1992 Rounder Records. All rights reserved.
