The Yuroks live near the northern California coast. The Brush Dance heard here is performed by the community as part of a healing ceremony for a child. Heavy songs, sung first, draw in the spirit. Light songs like this one follow and inspire the dancers to dance more vigorously. Typically in community singing the leader sings solo against a chorus singing an ostinato (a short, repeating, rhythmic phrase).
"Brush Dance" performed by Yurok singers and dancers, Hector Simms, lead, from Songs of Love, Luck, Animals and Magic (Cat.# New World Records 80297-2) (c)and(p)1977 Recorded Anthology of American Music, Inc. All rights reserved.
