Wilma Rudolph
At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Italy, Wilma Rudolph became the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field at a single Olympics. Rudolph also competed in track-and-field events at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. Her accomplishments were more notable because she had several debilitating diseases as a child, including polio.
