Roman general, statesman, and historian Gaius Julius Caesar was the most famous member of the Caesar family, which had been prominent in Rome since the 3rd century BC. Julius Caesar established himself as a brilliant military strategist when he conquered all of the ancient western European territories of Gaul by 51 BC.
