Stephen Douglas
In 1858 Illinois Democrat Stephen Douglas, nicknamed the Little Giant, engaged Republican Abraham Lincoln in a series of debates while seeking reelection to the United States Senate. Although Douglas won the Senate race, in 1860 he lost the presidential election to Lincoln, whom he then supported during the American Civil War (1861-1865).
