John James Audubon
Born in Haiti and educated in France, American naturalist, ornithologist, and artist John James Audubon settled in the United States at age 18 and began compiling drawings and paintings of local wildlife. From 1827 to 1838, Audubon published Birds of America, a collection of life-sized, hand-colored folio plates on native birds. The National Aubudon Society, formed to conserve natural habitats and preserve wildlife, was founded in his honor.
