In 1932 United States Speaker of the House John Nance Garner of Texas was elected vice president of the United States under Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt. Garner served as vice president for Roosevelt’s first two terms. In 1941 Garner retired from politics after unsuccessfully attempting to gain the Democratic presidential nomination.
