A Belgian missionary priest, in 1873 Father Damien was transferred from Honolulu, Hawaii, to a colony for people suffering from Hansen’s Disease—more commonly known as leprosy—on the island of Molokai. There he devoted himself to their care until he too died from leprosy in 1889.
