Charles Francis Adams
American diplomat and editor Charles Francis Adams served in the United States House of Representatives for two terms, and as minister to Britain in 1861, during the American Civil War. He deftly handled diplomatic relations with the British and encouraged them to detain vessels they had built to aid the Confederacy.
