Illumination from Scivias

Illumination from Scivias
German composer and mystic Hildegard of Bingen wrote devotional songs and poetry inspired by intense visions she experienced. She became superior of an order of nuns in 1136 and went on to found two other orders. Shown here is an illumination from her book of visions called Scivias. It was printed in 1179, the year of her death. The book is in the Biblioteca Statale in Lucca, Italy.
