Smallpox Viruses
A colored-transmission electron micrograph shows a group of Orthopoxvirus variola, the virus that causes smallpox. Once greatly feared for its ability to kill or disable its victims, smallpox was eradicated by 1979 through a worldwide vaccination campaign.
