A microscopic image shows poliomyelitis viruses, which enter the body through the nose and mouth and destroy nerve cells by multiplying rapidly inside of them. The infection can cause permanent paralysis. Since an effective vaccine was developed in the 1950s, poliomyelitis has been nearly eliminated in developed countries.
