Eisenhower Commands NATO
In 1950 United States military hero General Dwight D. Eisenhower was appointed commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Europe. NATO, a regional defense alliance, at that time comprised Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and the United States. Other nations were admitted later. Eisenhower is shown here in a 1951 photograph.
