Roosevelt Nominates Smith
Franklin D. Roosevelt nominated Alfred Smith for the presidency at the 1924 Democratic National Convention. Smith failed to win the party’s nomination until 1928, when he became the first Roman Catholic to run for president. He later became a critic of Roosevelt’s New Deal policies.
