Rioting lasted for five days in New York City when people rebelled against an 1863 draft law that gave the rich the option not to serve. The mostly foreign-born laborers, who could not afford to pay for substitutes to fight for them in the Civil War, damaged many buildings, including the black children’s orphanage pictured here.
