| In 1801 war erupted between the north African state of Tripoli (in what is now the country of Libya) and the United States. The United States refused to pay a tribute above the amount fixed by treaty to the pasha (ruler) of Tripoli. This etching shows intense fighting during the approximately four-year war, which resulted in a victory for the United States. | ||||||
