| When Edmond Charles Édouard Genêt, French diplomatic representative to the United States, attempted to involve the United States in the French Revolution, President George Washington requested that France recall him. In 1794 France sent a replacement and demanded Genêt’s extradition. Washington, fearing the French would execute Genêt, allowed the Frenchman to remain in the United States and to become a U.S. citizen. |
