The sites include Āgra, location of the 17th-century domed mausoleum known as the Taj Mahal; Sanchi, site of the Great Stupa, an ancient Buddhist temple completed in the 1st century ad; Khajurāho, where nearly 80 Hindu temples once stood; and Elephanta, known for its 8th-century temple caves containing statues of Hindu gods. Some of the oldest architectural remains, dating back to about 2500 bc, are located in Mohenjo-Daro and Harappā, in Pakistan. |
