1850s The Underground Railroad continues to help fugitive slaves reach safety in free states and Canada.
1850 The Taiping Rebellion, a popular uprising against the Chinese imperial government of the Manchu dynasty, begins. The rebellion ends in 1864, having resulted in as many as 20 million deaths.
1851-1852 Uncle Tom's Cabin by American writer and abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe is published.
1852 Louis Napoleon Bonaparte proclaims himself emperor of France, becoming Napoleon III.
