Carpetbagger Speaks to a Crowd
After the American Civil War (1861-1865), Northerners came to the South for a variety of reasons: to make money, to help rebuild, and to enter politics in the new Republican governments being formed. They were called “Carpetbaggers” because of the bags made out of carpet that they brought with them. In this picture, a carpetbagger speaks to a group of poor blacks and whites.
