American cellist Yo-Yo Ma has earned praise and admiration for his virtuosic, sensitive interpretations of classical music by such composers as Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven, from Germany; Dmitry Shostakovich, from Russia; and Béla Bartók, from Hungary. Ma has also experimented in other musical genres, playing with such musicians as jazz violinist Stephane Grapelli and jazz-pop vocalist Bobby McFerrin.
