| The Mercury Program (1961-1963) was the United States’s first piloted space program. The seven astronauts who took part were, left to right, M. Scott Carpenter, L. Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Walter Schirra, Alan B. Shepard, and Deke Slayton. This photograph was taken in January 1961, four months before the first piloted spaceflight. |
