African American playwright August Wilson won a number of major awards for his plays, including Pulitzer Prizes for Fences (1985) and The Piano Lesson (1987). In this excerpt from Fences, Wilson reads the part of Troy Maxson, a once-great baseball player who now makes his living as a garbage collector. In the play, Troy struggles with his duty to support his family, his desire for something more, and the specter of death he constantly senses around him.
