| During the early Christian era, hermits and ascetics settled in the Sinai Peninsula, particularly in its southern portion. In the 6th century ad the Byzantine emperor Justinian I built and fortified the Monastery of Saint Catherine at the foot of Mount Sinai. Saint Catherine’s served as a site of Christian pilgrimage for many centuries and remains a functioning monastery. | ||||||
