Monastery of Saint Catherine, Sinai Peninsula
During the early Christian era, hermits and ascetics settled in the Sinai Peninsula, particularly in its southern portion. In the 6th century ad the Byzantine emperor Justinian I built and fortified the Monastery of Saint Catherine at the foot of Mount Sinai. Saint Catherine’s served as a site of Christian pilgrimage for many centuries and remains a functioning monastery.
