Hoping both to protect its Roman Catholic missionaries from Vietnamese persecution and to become a colonial force, France attacked portions of Vietnam in the mid-1800s. France won control of the country after seizing southern Vietnam in the 1860s and northern Vietnam in 1883. | ||||||
