After World War II, Communist Viet Minh forces pushed to expel French colonists from Vietnam. In 1954, in a major offensive, the Viet Minh attacked and defeated the French at Dien Bien Phu. United States Secretary of State John Foster Dulles announced the fall of Dien Bien Phu on television and radio on May 8, 1954, sparking discussion of future American involvement in Vietnam.
