Isenheim Altarpiece

Isenheim Altarpiece
The Isenheim Altarpiece (1512?-1515?) by German artist Matthias Grünewald is considered one of the most important works from the Renaissance in northern Europe. The Crucifixion, center, depicts a gruesomely tortured Jesus Christ with anguished mourners. He is flanked by Saint Sebastian, left, and Saint Anthony, right, with the entombment of Christ below. The altarpiece is in the Musée d’Unterlinden, Colmar, France.
