In the early 1950s Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin terrorized many people in the United States with his public “investigations” and unsubstantiated accusations of Communist activity. He called people from all walks of life to his hearings, including officials from the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Army. Many officials were forced to resign in the face of Cold War public opinion. The U.S. Senate ultimately censured McCarthy for his unscrupulous methods of inquiry.
