The barrage of radio stations that went on the air during the early part of the 20th century revealed the need for regulation to control the use of frequencies by different radio stations. The Radio Act of 1912 directed the Secretary of Commerce to assign frequencies so that only one station could be heard per frequency. In 1934 the Federal Radio Commission, which later became the Federal Communications Commission, was created to further regulate the use of radio frequencies and to control the types of programming.
