Growth of Italian Cities
During the 14th century, Italy’s cities became more diverse with an influx of peasants from the countryside and the rise of new commercial classes. Many of these growing cities came under the domination of despotic rulers who helped to bring greater stability and order that, in turn, fostered the development of Renaissance culture. The shaded areas surrounding each city on this map represent the city’s area of influence.
