Dinoflagellate
The dinoflagellates are the second most important group of phytoplankton, responsible for producing energy in the ocean food chain. They have a whiplike structure called a flagellum that acts as an organ of locomotion, and the organisms demonstrate both plant and animal traits. Dinoflagellates can reproduce rapidly, or bloom, and certain species bloom in toxic red tides that kill fish and contaminate shellfish.
