| James Monroe, fifth U.S. president, fought in the American Revolution. He served in the Virginia Assembly, the Congress of Confederation, and the U.S. Senate and served concurrently as secretary of state and secretary of war. He helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase, but he is best known as the author of the Monroe Doctrine, which warned the countries of Europe against interfering with the affairs of nations in the western hemisphere. | ||||||
