Development of Courtly Love

Development of Courtly Love
The concept of courtly love developed among the aristocratic classes of Europe during the late-1100s. In courtly love, a man passionately devoted himself to a lady who was married or engaged to another man. Because medieval marriages often consisted of little more than business contracts, courtly love functioned as the only true romance in the lives of many Europeans. As exemplified in this painting, Couple Amoureux (Amorous Couple), medieval artists, troubadors, and authors used courtly love as an integral theme in much of their work.
