Four species of flamingos make up the family Phoenicopteridae. They are found in shallow alkaline soda or salt lagoons and lakes in parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, the Galápagos, and, like the bird pictured here, the Caribbean. Flamingos feed on microscopic algae, diatoms, and invertebrates that they strain from the water and mud with their sievelike bills. The call of an American species can be heard here.
