| Pierre Samuel du Pont, the great-grandson of French-American industrialist Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, helped to expand the company founded by his great-grandfather into one of the world’s largest chemical manufacturing companies. Du Pont, named for his great-great-grandfather, the famed French economist, began acquiring chemical companies in 1915, and by 1934, he owned 16 of them. During both World War I and World War II, E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, Inc. was one of the principal suppliers of explosives to the United States military. |
