| In this fresco, one of a series of frescoes executed by 14th-century Italian artist Giotto in the Church of Santa Croce in Florence, Italy, Francis of Assisi receives papal confirmation for the rule of his Franciscan order. Francis, a mystic and preacher, was canonized by the Roman Catholic church in 1228, two years after his death. The Franciscans went on to become a powerful and influential order in the church. |
