| American religious leader Mary Baker Eddy founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, in Massachusetts in 1879. Christian Scientists believe in healing by relying on God’s power and not on medicine. Eddy evolved this doctrine of divine healing after suffering a serious fall on ice in 1866 and treating herself with the help of a biblical revelation. Subsequent to the fall, Eddy studied the stories of Christ’s healings in the Bible and wrote her own book entitled Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (1875). |
