| Born Martha Dandridge in New Kent County, Virginia, she married a wealthy planter, Daniel Parke Custis, at age 17. Custis died, leaving her with two children and a large estate; his death made her the wealthiest widow in Virginia. Two years later, she married George Washington. Martha often traveled with him during the Revolutionary War, sharing his hardships. During his presidency, many called her Lady Washington, but she preferred her life at Mount Vernon, where she did not feel like a “state prisoner,” as she often said she did in the presidential mansion. |
