Martin Van Buren

Martin Van Buren
Martin Van Buren, eighth president of the United States, took office in 1837, the year of the nation’s first great depression, called the Panic of 1837. Many citizens turned to the government for help, but Van Buren refused to act, claiming the less government interfered, the better for the prosperity of the country. He served only one term.
